Hi,

Archives in France are generally online for free, but very few are indexed, and that includes censuses. You'll find the censuses on their respective "Archives départementales", but you'll have to know which city to search, and you'll have to look at each image.

The records of the Etat Civil (birth, marriage, death) sometimes include the street or neighborhood where ancestors lived. This makes it easier to locate them in the census (recensements), especially in larger towns.

Here is a more complete list of archive sites. While most of what you need is usually found in the departmental archives, some larger towns have their own archives.
